Quick Review: Vampire Weekend – Modern Vampires of the City”

Though we live on the U.S. dollar, you and I, we, share our own sense of time.

I’m declaring Vampire Weekend’s newest album “Modern Vampires of the City” the best album of 2013, the best album this decade, and an ALL-TIME great. It’s a notch below the Beatles’ best, but only one. It’s close. Songs “Diane Young” and “Hannah Hunt” battle in different styles for best song, and best overall song this year! Two all time classics.

On that note, I am strongly considering that Vampire Weekend could be our generation’s biggest and most important band. They keep churning out incredibly catchy tunes, yet it’s far from cookie-cutter. They’ve put out three albums, all fantastic. Their first started them off with a bang. Almost perfect from start to finish, it’s about as good a debut album you can make. Their second album had fewer solid songs and was a bit uneven, but you can now see they were trying out more and more experimentation; they were experimenting how far they could push their music while still having their unique VW sound. That was the test run. Their third album, 2013’s Modern Vampires of the City is the perfection of that experimentation. The songs are lush. It sounds like endless hours and tries were spent on each and every song. The piano lines are beautiful and dominant. Not in an overpowering way, but in how they stand out so elegantly. Anyone else hearing that Paul Simon influence  in there as well? Paul Simon is one of the gold standard American songwriters;  Vampire Weekend could one day in the not-to-distant-future be right alongside him. Amazing album from start to finish.

Giving their quick rise (1 above average album, 1 classic debut, and 1 classic all-time album, countless hits), Vampire Weekend has established themselves as one of THE artists. I don’t see them slowing down from here. At this pace, an all-time classic band is how we, one day, could describe them.

A Quick Review: The Watch

A Quick Review:

The Watch

Very underrated comedy. The quirky writing and over the top (in a good way) acting is excellent. Ben Stiller plays the typical sadsuck character he does, but he does it well. Jonah Hill’s character is a little mentally-disturbed it seems, but he gets many hearty laughs for sure. Will Forte has some absolutely hilarious lines (and faces, below) in a minor role. He’s too funny a guy. I sometimes get sick of his act, but Vince Vaughn went to a different depth for his comedy, and it works so well. Super funny Vince Vaughn, and it’s a refreshing slight change up for him.

The production quality is very high. Very slick camera shots and animation, looked real good.

The story itself doesn’t make much sense, but that’s kind of the point. The scenes are almost all very funny. I don’t understand why this movie bombed. Definitely rent it soon if you need some solid laughs. 8.5/10

Warrior

Fantastic movie. The storyline is deeply-woven and always twisting deeper. The acting is nothing short of fantastic. I see Tom Hardy (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) as our generation’s Robert de Niro. Highly recommend seeing this movie. 9/10
